“If you take your wife or girlfriend or partner to see this movie, you might get the benefit when you get home,” he teases with a grin.
The 32-year-old English actor is referring to the salacious S&M and bondage scenes which turned the trilogy of books into a phenomenon with more than 100 million copies in 52 languages consumed all over the world.
He also reveals those R-rated scenes between wealthy businessman Christian Grey and virginal beauty Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) were filmed on a closed set.
“I have done sex scenes before on a closed set but there’s still more people than you would ever see in a room while you are having sex with someone,” he laughs. “It’s strange but we tried to make it really fun.”
Dakota Johnson, who is the 25-year-old daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffiths, acknowledges her own upbringing helped prepare her for the role. “I was brought up in an environment where I was told to be comfortable with myself and my parents instilled a lot of self-confidence in me.”
Addressing criticism that the film has an anti-feminist slant, Johnson disagrees. “I think the loss of a woman’s virginity is one of the most profound moment in a woman’s life... so she experiences this, coupled with the unique interests of Christian and throughout the entire thing, she carries such strength and honour with her. I was enchanted by the amount of self-worth that this young woman has in this day and age,” she adds.
